How we treat workplace injuries
Treatment is built around your assessment, your job and your return-to-work goals. It usually combines:
- Manual therapy. Joint mobilization and soft tissue techniques to ease pain and restore movement.
- McKenzie method. Specific movements and positions for neck and back pain, which also teach you how to manage flare-ups yourself.
- Exercise therapy. Progressive strengthening and mobility work matched to the demands of your job.
- Traction. Cervical and lumbar traction, used when it suits your condition.
- Pain relief. TENS, interferential current (IFC) and ultrasound, used alongside exercise.
- Work conditioning. A structured program of graded strengthening, endurance and job-specific tasks for workers returning to heavy or physically demanding jobs.
- Return to work. A plan for returning to your job, including modified duties when needed, with progress reported to WSIB.
When to seek urgent care: go to the emergency department or call 911 after a workplace injury if you have a head injury with confusion or vomiting, loss of consciousness, a suspected broken bone, new numbness or weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control.
WSIB physiotherapy: common questions
Do I need to see a doctor?
Yes. See a doctor after your injury. Your doctor sends WSIB the Health Professional's Report (Form 8), which WSIB needs for your claim.
What is work conditioning?
A program for workers returning to heavy or physically demanding jobs. It builds strength and endurance step by step and practises the lifting, carrying and other tasks your job requires.
Do I have to pay anything?
No. WSIB pays for approved treatment of your workplace injury, and we bill them directly. If anything is not covered, we will tell you before treatment.
How long does WSIB physiotherapy last?
Most workplace muscle and joint injuries are treated under the WSIB Musculoskeletal Program of Care, which runs up to eight weeks. WSIB can approve more treatment if you need it.
I don't have a claim number yet. Can I still come in?
Report the injury to your employer and see a doctor first. Then book with us and bring your employer's name and address and the date of your injury.
Can I switch to your clinic from another provider?
Yes, but WSIB needs to approve the change first. Ask your WSIB case manager, and we can help with the request.
I was in a car accident while working. Can you help?
Yes. Your claim may go through WSIB or your auto insurer. We bill both directly. See car accident physiotherapy.
What should I bring?
Your WSIB claim number if you have one, your employer's name and address, the date of your injury, your health card, and any hospital or doctor's reports.
